Pinterest Fails
08/22/2012

I stopped using Pinterest back when the whole legal issues with copyright infringement were going on, but since that has been resolved, I’ve been going on more and more, and pinning great projects here and there. Last night I decided to put one of my pins to work. The one about cleaning baking sheets, after they turned brown with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. I was pretty giddy about this, because we are about to just throw our baking sheets away, and buy some new ones. They are THAT bad. After seeing a pin about cleaning them on Pinterest though, I thought I was about to save the day and some money.

Looks legit, right? I went home last night, made my mixture of the miracle cleaner, and then I scrubbed my little heart out, and then I scrubbed some more, and some more. Eventually, I got fed up with scrubbing, rinsed the sheet off and showed it to Travis. I asked him if he noticed a difference between the left side compared to the right (I only scrubbed one side of the baking sheet), he said no. I didn’t noticed a difference either, so it was a fail. Did I do something wrong? Anyone else know a different way to get the brown marks off of the tray?

Since that Pin went wrong, I decided to share some other things that I pinned, tried, and failed at.
Like this wood letter transfer. I tried this with three wooden plaques for my city signs.

[Source]

It didn’t work, but I think that’s because I don’t have that steady of a hand. In the end it looked like a three year old painted it and just could not stay in the lines. Another problem might of been poor lighting. Our living room is in the lowest level of the basement, therefore we don’t get much sunlight, so I could barely see the indents in the wood. Advice: Have plenty of natural light & a steady hand.

I’ve also tried using MANY tutorials on Pinterest on how to dye a mason jar blue.

I’ve tried dying my jars three separate times now, and it never comes out right. Help!?

The last fail I have, is using vaseline to distress something that I’m painting. I used this technique on a three hook shelf that I bought from Michael’s. I painted the shelf white, but some vaseline around the edges, spray painted grey overtop and then wiped off the vaseline.

[Source]

After doing the vaseline technique, it looks ridiculous. Kind of looks like big blobs of white paint everywhere. So frustrating! I have to say that with as many fails as I’ve encountered, I’ve had an equal number of successes. Like my christmas tree skirt, my NOEL sign and my bottle cap magnets.

Have you ever had a Pinterest Fail? What about a Pinterest Success?

Don’t you hate when that happens?! I guess it’s all part of DIYing though. :) I recently made some DIY foam soap to refill our soap dispenser and it was a success!

Glad it worked out! I find that if I stay off of Pinterest, then things go better :P

haha, that’s a great stage! I use to spend all day on there and then I started pulling away, because I’d never get anything done. I still pin things here and there, but I’ve started taking Home Ideas & Wedding Ideas, and pulling them off of there and putting them in Evernote, so when the time comes I can just print out my inspiration and put them in a binder, instead of looking all over Pinterest. :)

Hehehe… this is so me. I swear, half the projects I try end up in big ol fails. :( Thanks for sharing though, because I had been wanting to try dying glass. Maybe I’ll skip that now!

Ive definitely had a lot more successes than failures with Pinterest but I’ve definitely encountered both. I tried transfering a computer printed text to wood too using a tutorial from Pinterest. You had to print it backwards and then wet the paper and rub it with a blunt object. The ink definitely didn’t transfer at all… total fail. That’s probably my worst one so far.

I feel your pain! The whole dying bottles/jars thing didn’t work for me at all last Christmas!

Have you heard of Pinstrosity? So hilarious!

Bummer that these didn’t work out for you, though. :( My only suggestion for the cleaner, though, is to let it sit for a little while and do it’s magic before you start scrubbing.

No, I haven’t. I’ll have to check it out.
& I let it sit for awhile, after my many scrubbing attempts, and it didn’t do a thing. :(

aw, poor Melanie! I can’t believe how many times pinterest has failed you! I still have yet to figure out how to get the brown off of baking sheets. Annoys the heck out of me. But I do tend to cook with a sheet of tin foil on it to keep it from getting there in the first place… That’s my only solution so far. I would think vinegar and baking soda would work, but I haven’t tried it…

I get all nervous when I try a Pinterest recipe. It’s always a gamble.

Bummer on the pans. I thought it looked to good to be true.

I have been wondering about the pans. I pinned it a while back but haven’t tried it yet. I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. I love all the ideas, crafts, and recipes on there but find that tend to just pin them and never follow through with the project. I think it’s how most people use it.
