Stained Stars

About three weekends ago I worked on a really easy and quick project but I just now got around to hanging them up, so it’s finally time to share it, I guess. Around the end of April I saw some wooden stars at Michael’s for $2.99 a piece, so I grabbed 3. I took them to my parent’s house then and stained them a nice dark walnut.

I forgot to bring my foam stain brush along, so I grabbed what my dad used to re-stain the trim work in the house – a rubber glove; safety first!

And one of his old socks. Worked like a charm.

I had to do about four coats each, and sand them down pretty well, especially the corners. There was also some flaws in the wood that had to be sanded down.

So three weeks later, I hung them up in the living room. I choose the corner where Coco’s food dishes are. We’ve been really working on trying to get things on the walls lately. We have so many frames, but we just have not gotten around to hanging much of anything. Note: I forgot to white balance these last two photos, that’s why everything looks so yellow.

As you can see, that little wooden cabinet made it’s way into the living room temporarily. And there is a frame laying against it. Travis was going to hang that last night, but he gets easily distracted, so there it sits. I’m thinking about doing another gallery wall in the living room, after I finish the one in the kitchen. & yes, Coco is staring right at me, she was meowing at me which in translation means, “please come to my food bowl and pet me while I eat, because I am spoiled rotten.”

Looking at those pictures makes me hate those weird beige textured walls even more. I have to keep telling myself, “You will have a house one day, you will be able to paint walls and trim, you will be able to do whatever you want. One day.”

Oh I love that walnut colour. I have to pay more attention at Michaels. You always seem to find good stuff. I seem to always only come out with spray paint.

What I do is I start at the beginning of the store and make my way around the entire store, aisle by aisle. You really have to look at everything as you go. My problem is I stare at something for like 5 minutes trying to decide if I want to buy it or not, hahah. I have to convince myself to get it, or leave it.

Blarg, I remember the days of renting and not being able to change anything.

But on a happier note, that cabinet is so cute!

They came out great! I’ve actually never thought to stain something from Michael’s. Not sure why, but my mind immediately goes to paint.

Love them! I have a serious love for stars. They turned out great and look great there.

Yes- your house will come soon enough. I know it’s hard when you want something that bad but it will come.

This is right up my alley – love it! I’ve been staining all the trim in our house this week, so I’m a pro now. I must keep my eye open for some adorable stars now!!
