Planting for Earth Day

Earth Day is on Sunday and I’ve been trying to figure out what to plant. I really wanted to plant a tree, but since I don’t have a house yet, that really wouldn’t work out too well. My problem was solved though when a hotel came by my work, to promote themselves, and gave us a bookmark that was embedded with seeds. How cool is that?

It even told you what kind of flower it was, how to plant it, and how long until it starts to sprout.

Just in case you can’t read it, it says:

Plant This Bookmark! Your bookmark is handmade from natural biodegradable fibers and embedded with seeds. When planted it will grow the popular Echinacea flower (also known as the purple coneflower). After you finish your book, remove the vellum piece, then soak the handmade paper thoroughly. Sow 1/4″ deep in fine soil indoors in a pot, or directly in a spring garden. Keep warm and moist until the seeds germinate in approximately two weeks. The paper will recycle into the soil, and the seeds will burst into lovely Echinacea!

So the flower should come out looking like this:

Pretty right? And here is a close up of the bookmark with the embedded seeds.

I just followed the directors and soaked the bookmark for awhile. And then folded it up and put it in a mason jar (the same mason jar from before, which Coco knocked on the bedroom floor, and so we had to replant something in it.)

I then covered the bookmark in soil.

It’s been sitting in the bathroom window now for exactly one week. Nothing has happened yet though, so we’ll see if it sprouts any. Both of my other flowers are really growing, but so far, no flowers.

Can you tell I’ve been super busy? I can’t even get a day-light picture of my plants. The one above was taken at 6AM on my way to work, yuck.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Are you doing anything special for Earth Day (the 22nd) or for Arbor Day (the 27th)?

I got one of those bookmarks as a wedding favor, but mine never sprouted :( hopefully yours does soon!

I haven’t really thought much about Earth Day since I was in school and they made a big deal about it. I should make an Earth Resolution of sorts or something this year since I can’t plant anything. Something like be more vigilant about recycling.

    Have a good weekend!

Love the idea of the bookmark- very cool. Good for you for planting something too. I never really mark Earth Day by doing much but maybe I should start doing that!

    Have a great weekend!

I don’t have any plants in my house and while my house and outbuildings are surrounded by mulch beds… all but about five plants are weeds. I really need to try and get out there to clean them out this weekend.

I do have two (very sad and dying) trees on my lot and its been suggested I cut them down so they don’t fall on the house. I’m not sure if I will replant or not. My lot is very small and I’d hate to have a tree topple over on my roof.

I think I may buy a few house plants this weekend in honor of Earth Day. :)

Are the plants you have in your house cat friendly? My cats are super curious and I don’t want them to eat anything that might make them sick.

Yes, they are. Here is a list of toxic plants to cats: http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/poison-control/plant-list-cats.aspx
